Incense and burners: how to choose

A short guide to choosing an incense burner and the right incense for it. With the pieces we stock and their prices, side by side.

Three questions before you choose

  1. What do you want to burn?

Sticks and cones burn on their own and only need a simple holder. Loose resin needs charcoal and a metal vessel.

  2. Where will it stay?

A hanging burner or one with a handle lets you carry the smoke around the house. A table burner stays in one place.

  3. Is it a gift?

An incense set with several scents is the easiest gift: it can be used straight away and needs no practice.

Burners

In brass, copper or wood. Check each product page for the kind of incense it takes, because not every burner suits everything.

Incense

Sets with several scents, made in India. The simple way to try before settling on one scent.

Before you light it

  • Place the burner on a stable, heat-resistant surface.
  • Open a window: any smoke indoors calls for ventilation.
  • Never leave incense burning unattended, or within reach of children or pets.

Frequently asked questions

Which burner works for sticks?

A holder with a hole for the stick and a base for the ash, or a table burner that takes sticks. Check the product page: not every brass burner holds a stick.

What are backflow cones?

Cones with a hole in the base. The smoke flows down instead of up and runs along the burner. They only work on a backflow burner, and a regular cone will not give that effect.

How do you burn loose resin?

On a charcoal disc made for incense, inside a metal vessel with a layer of sand. Wait until the charcoal glows, then add a pinch of resin.

Is it safe to burn incense at home?

Burning incense releases fine particles, like any smoke. Use it with a window open, one piece at a time, and avoid it around babies, pregnant women or people with asthma.
